Strength, stamina, agility and balance.

Through playing in a team sport, our children learn to be cheerful and brave in adversity and at the same time, generous and humble in success. Specialist staff help make this a reality, and all teachers are involved in coaching or managing a sport’s team.

Moving to the Wanganui Collegiate School campus has increased the range of sports we are able to offer. This includes an introductory rowing course for our Year 7 & 8 students, which comprises weekly sessions over a six-week period that cover everything from learning to use an erg rowing machine to getting on the water and experiencing the real thing.

Our sports teams enjoy regular sporting exchanges throughout the year with other schools in the central and lower North Island. They compete in a variety of sports including hockey, rugby, netball, soccer, skiing, cricket, tennis, touch rugby, swimming, triathlon, athletics and the Round the Lake Relay.

As part of the PE curriculum at St George’s we offer expert coaching in a number of specialist areas, along with specific, age-related training for all events. This encourages enjoyment and safe participation.

Swimming is taught in groups based on a child’s ability, which allows targeted advancement and results in more rapid progress. The programme involves students working towards progressive swimming awards, each of which has survival and lifesaving components.

Two specialist St George’s teachers, both of them former representative track athletes, oversee our athletics programme. Our Year 7 and 8 students strive to achieve the Athletics New Zealand 5 Star Award and St George’s traditionally performs strongly in Inter-School athletics and cross-country events.
